To get better at lip reading start by watching a newscast and turning the volume down low. Newscasts are a perfect start because the newscaster is trained to speak clearly and distinctively. This will make it much easier for you to grasp what he or she is saying without much sound. Pay attention to the way the newscaster forms certain words. Gradually turn the volume down more and more.
Make sure there is silence throughout the rest of the room or house, as you're learning. Noises throughout the house, such as other tv's or children playing, will make it much more difficult to get in good practice.
As with learning any new trick, you'll have to put in many hours of practice to master it. Practice everyday, using television personalities as your guides. Eventually get to where you mute the tv and attempt to read lips on other shows. You'll grasp some words and some you won't. That's okay. Continue practicing any way.
